How to Plan your Career Strategy for 2024

February 28, 2024

It’s so important to have a career that is both fulfilling and enjoyable, to stay motivated and to feel rewarded for your work. If you feel a lack of fulfillment and/or enjoyment in your current career, it may be necessary to find a new position that improves your job satisfaction, as well as ensures that you’re genuinely interested in what you do.

As 2024 quickly approaches, it may be time to rethink your career goals and the strategy you’ll use to reach your full potential, and we’re here to help! We’ve outlined 4 essential factors to help you create a personal career strategy so you can elevate your career search for the new year:

Have a Strong Job Search Strategy:

Get really clear about what you’re searching for. Often times candidates submit countless applications to numerous positions, which can be really discouraging, yielding little to no results. Be honest about what’s not working for you in your current role and allow time for soul searching.

What’s not working?

Why is it not working?

What excites you about the possibility of a new role?

What types of problems do you want to solve? How do you want to spend your energy?

What brands do you admire?

Answering these questions will allow you to become intentional about what you want to do, and you can then streamline your search to reflect your refined career goals. Once you have this clarity, pursue opportunities that align with your personal strengths and preferences.

Craft Resumes that Get Results:

Statistics show that the average hiring manager/recruiter spends an average of 6 seconds looking at your resume! Therefore, you must yield to short attention spans and capture your experience in a precise and meaningful way.

Make what’s important really stand out by quantifying all of the achievements from your past. Highlight percentages, revenue amounts, specific metrics as this clearly helps hiring managers understand what you can do for them.

Premier Tip: Proofread, proofread, proofread! Typos are an immediate red flag and can disqualify you from getting to the interview process.

Learn how to Maximize your Interview Performance:

Job interviews are tough for most people, and they can feel daunting especially after not having interviewed for a period of time. The best way to overcome this and maximize your interview process is by practicing.

Most importantly, be concise during your interview process, a great tool to use is the STAR method. STAR stands for situation, task, action and result.

Situation – Describe the situation, when it took place and what was involved. This is your opportunity to set the scene.

Task – As a result of the situation, what needed to happen? Explain the tasks that needed to be completed to resolve the challenge.

Action- Provide details about the actions taken to achieve the achieved goal.

Result – What was the outcome? Describe a clear resolution to the challenge you outlined in your situation.

Using this method will allow you to highlight specifics with a focus on achievements such as profitability and/or market share growth.

Premier Tip: Research is key. Get to know the company and what they are looking for through clear direction from your trusted recruiter or through your own research. Understanding important factors such as the brand strategy, their recent launches and their current challenges are critical to identifying opportunities to leverage expertise. At Premier we act as an extension of our beauty brand clients and take pride in being a critical resource for our candidates.

Focus on all variables when reviewing an offer:

Once you receive an offer, it’s important to evaluate all of the important variables, with compensation being a crucial factor to consider, ensuring this opportunity is a long-term strategic career move. Do research upfront using trusted resources and salary databases to help you understand your market value and what compensation expectation you should have going into the offer stage.

Evaluate the full offer to ensure that it meets your needs financially and professionally by asking yourself the following questions:

Does this opportunity leverage your expertise?

Does the opportunity provide professional growth/challenges that put you on the path to reach your long-term goals?

Do you understand your full compensation including base and annual bonus? Do you understand the annual bonus structure and if so, is it attached to reasonable goals?

Do you understand the equity model and the LTI plan?

Are you clear about your benefits? (Understanding the employee vs. employee contribution is key).

Do you comprehend PTO vs. Vacation vs. Sick vs. Unlimited? (Unlimited vacation sounds great, but often times companies are so busy, no one takes their vacation).

Are you clear about your work schedule? (Hybrid/Remote and Onsite). Most companies have determined their schedule, however it’s important to confirm your schedule now to avoid any changes in the model going forward that may not align with expectations.

As 2024 approaches, we will start to see a huge influx of both candidates and job opportunities, through the 1st quarter.
