Rewriting the Job Search Playbook: 7 Steps Every Beauty Executive Needs Now

March 23, 2026

The beauty job market has changed dramatically – more candidates are chasing fewer roles, and technology now shapes how hiring decisions are made. In our latest Beauty Talent Talk episode, host Debbie Johnson sat down with executive coach Angela Bennett , founder of Beauty in Motion for a candid discussion on how beauty executives can stand out and thrive. Drawing on her experience coaching senior leaders across the industry, Angela shared a seven-step playbookdesigned to help candidates define their expertise, master strategic networking, and build stronger connections to land their next leadership role.

Step 1: Identify Your Expertise: The “jack of all trades” approach no longer cuts it. Companies increasingly favor specialists with deep experience in specific functions or categories. Executives should inventory their strengths, experiences, and skills to create a clear picture of their unique expertise and how it aligns with the role they’re targeting.

Step 2: Customize Every Application: Generic resumes and cover letters won’t work in today’s market. Each application should be tailored to the specific job, with more space given to the most relevant experiences and less to earlier or unrelated roles. The same applies to interviews – keep responses tightly linked to the requirements of the position.

Step 3: Network Strategically: Networking remains one of the most effective tools for landing a role, but it should go beyond cold outreach. Building a “networking forensic map” – charting connections and tapping into second- and third-degree networks, can uncover valuable insights and opportunities. Treat networking as market research and an opportunity to refine your personal story.

Step 4: Balance Credentials with Connection: Credentials may open doors, but personal connection often wins the job. Building rapport with hiring managers, showing genuine interest in the company, and articulating a clear personal “mission statement” can leave a lasting impression and set candidates apart.

Step 5: Demonstrate Strategic Thinking: Results matter, but so does the thinking behind them. Sharing how decisions were made, why certain strategies were chosen, and how problems were solved gives hiring managers confidence in a candidate’s judgment and decision-making skills.

Step 6: Communicate with Confidence: Clear, concise communication can make or break an interview. Using the “hamburger” method – starting with the situation, explaining the strategic thinking (the “meat”), and closing with the results, helps keep answers structured and impactful. Having 5–10 “power stories” rehearsed can also ensure responses stay smooth and on-point.

Step 7: Show Your Passion: Authentic enthusiasm for the company and its products can set candidates apart. Trying the products, visiting stores, engaging with brand advisors, and asking thoughtful questions all signal preparation and genuine interest.

Together, these seven steps create a powerful framework for standing out in today’s highly competitive job market. They combine practical tactics with a mindset shift – moving from presenting credentials to demonstrating alignment, curiosity, and strategic value.
