Creating Job Opportunities Amidst Economic Turmoil

September 3, 2024

Debbie Johnson, the founder of Premier Executive Recruiting, began her career in the wake of 9/11. This initiation into the industry, during a time of crisis, has equipped her with a profound ability to manage searches through economic downturns. Her experience and expertise have made her a trusted partner for both candidates and companies navigating uncertain times.

Despite the inherent resilience of the beauty industry, the past year has seen notable fluctuations, posing both challenges and opportunities for recruitment.

The First Half of 2023: A Busy Period for Specialized Roles

The initial months of 2023 were anticipated to be particularly active, with a high demand for roles in:

  • Brand Marketing: Emphasis on innovative strategies to boost brand visibility and engagement.
  • Sales: Focus on retail expansion strategies to capture a broader market share.
  • Product Development: High demand for professionals with expertise in chemistry and ingredients.
  • Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) Roles: Leveraging digital channels to drive sales and customer loyalty.

Increased Specificity in Search Criteria

As the industry evolves, search criteria have become increasingly specific, particularly in terms of category and distribution expertise. This specialization has narrowed the talent pool, making the search process more prolonged. Beauty Executives are now navigating economic uncertainties, adhering to stringent budgets and sometimes downsizing roles to enhance cost-effectiveness.

Impact of PE/VC Firms on Recruitment Dynamics

Private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) firms have also influenced the recruitment landscape. Amidst economic challenges, firms have paused investments and replaced C-level executives who did not meet growth expectations. While this has led to some instability, it has also created new opportunities across the board, allowing for fresh talent to step into leadership roles.

Looking Ahead: Anticipating a Slowdown and Identifying Growth Areas

As we move closer to the election, a slowdown is anticipated due to increased uncertainty affecting investments and human capital. However, companies continue to show resilience by restructuring and hiring executives even amid economic fluctuations. Notably, growth persists in categories such as hair care, skincare, and fragrance, indicating robust opportunities in these segments despite broader market challenges.

A recent study by Circana noted that despite growth slowing in beauty, there are bright spots, namely in the prestige fragrance, lip oil, and hair wellness segments, again proving that even in economic decline, the beauty industry remains resilient.

U.S. prestige beauty industry sales revenue grew by 9% in the first quarter, compared to the same period in 2023, according to Circana. “The slowdown in growth that we are seeing in the beauty industry is a reflection of an industry stabilizing after strong double-digit performance for the past two years,” said Larissa Jensen, Global Beauty Industry Advisor at Circana. “But we should not underestimate its strength, as sales grew by over $600 million in Q1.” You can read more here.
