Unlocking Opportunity: 7 Proven Tips from a Career Strategist

The job market is more competitive than ever, and if you’ve been applying to roles without hearing back, you’re not alone. Candidates are investing hours into online applications only to receive automated rejections or worse, no response at all. In our latest episode of Beauty Talent Talk, our founder Debbie Johnson sat down with career strategist and keynote speaker Danielle Cobo to discuss what it really takes to get noticed in today’s market – and how to position yourself for success.

During the episode’s insightful conversation, Danielle offered clear, actionable guidance on how to navigate the current landscape. Below are some of the most impactful takeaways from the conversation:

1. Customize Your Resume for Each Role: A one-size-fits-all resume no longer works. Danielle recommends creating tailored versions of your resume based on the specific job description, especially when applying to different types of roles. Highlight the skills and experience most relevant to each position and avoid overloading the resume with responsibilities that don’t directly align.

2. Include Quantifiable Achievements: Too many resumes focus on responsibilities rather than results. Danielle emphasized measurable outcomes – such as sales growth, cost savings or team performance objectives that demonstrate the impact you’ve had in previous/ current roles. Hiring managers want to see how you’ve moved the needle.

3. Optimize for ATS: Many resumes never make it to a real person because they’re filtered out by applicant tracking systems. Use relevant keywords from the job posting but be strategic. Danielle cautions against stuffing your resume with generic terms or relying solely on AI to rewrite it. Instead, ensure it reflects both substance and structure.

4. Leverage LinkedIn as Your Digital Resume: Your LinkedIn profile is often the first thing hiring managers or recruiters will check. Danielle recommends investing in a strong, professional photo, a clear and compelling headline, and a well-written “About” section that reflects your personal brand and career accomplishments. An optimized profile can open doors, often before you even apply.

5. Network Strategically: Most roles aren’t filled through job boards; they’re filled through people. Reach out to hiring managers or potential team members on LinkedIn to learn more about the role. Be polite, concise, and respectful of their time. Many companies also have employee referral programs, and these internal connections can help you bypass the ATS entirely.

6. Partner with the Right Recruiters: Especially in specialized fields like beauty, working with recruiters who understand your space can be a game-changer. Danielle advises viewing recruiters as partners – share your goals clearly and treat the relationship as a two-way street. A strong recruiter can advocate for you and help identify opportunities you may not find on your own.

7. Keep Your Confidence and Skills Sharp: Rejection can be discouraging, but staying confident is key. Danielle encourages job seekers to stay proactive – whether that’s refining your personal brand, taking a course or reaching out for feedback. Continuous growth, even between roles, shows resilience and initiative.

Whether you’re currently job hunting or planning your next move, this episode is packed with practical advice to help you navigate the process with more clarity and confidence.
